Drive the Cost of Snowflake to Zero
Snowflake customers that share data with external organizations can further increase their cost savings with this rebate program. Customers automatically receive an equivalent of 10 percent of the credits their data consumers use when performing operations on shared data. From December 1, 2018, all qualified Snowflake customers are eligible for this program. It’s easy to use and will further reduce the low cost of using Snowflake Data Cloud.
HOW DOES THE REBATE PROGRAM WORK?
Snowflake credits are consumed when a Snowflake customer performs operations on its data. With Snowflake Collaboration, a Snowflake customer can become a “provider” and share data with other Snowflake customers, who would use that data as “consumers”. Through Snowflake’s rebate program, providers will receive a credit rebate equal to 10% of their consumers’ usage when those consumers perform operations on a provider’s shared data inside of Snowflake.
Since Snowflake computes credits based on the runtime of virtual warehouses (compute clusters), a heuristic model is used to attribute credits to jobs, and from within a job, credits are apportioned based on:
- Provenance of the different sources of data
- The amount of data contributed for a query
- The difference in credit price if the consumer and provider are on different editions of the Snowflake service.
FAQ
Q: What happens if I share data to an account with a different edition?
A: If the provider and the consumer are using different editions of the Snowflake service, then the credits consumed by the consumer will be converted using the then-current list price into the same dollar-to-credit ratio as the edition used by the provider in order to calculate the amount of the credits earned by the provider.
Q: Does this apply to any form of data sharing?
A: This rebate only applies to sharing between different companies from multiple Snowflake accounts and provisioned under separate Snowflake agreements. It does not apply to sharing via Snowflake Reader accounts, or internal sharing within a company.
Q: Can my account have a positive balance if the rebates exceed my Snowflake consumption?
A: No, rebates are capped at the level of consumption of a given Snowflake account, per month, per region.
Q: How will I know if I’m getting any credits as part of this rebate?
A: Your billing statement will reflect credits as well as the consumers that generated the credits. To view the rebate amount, simply query the organization usage schema where usage type equals Rebate.
Q: Do I need to do anything to claim or activate the rebate?
A: No. Unless you opt out by notifying us, you’ll be automatically eligible for the program if you share data. If you wish to opt out of receiving credits, please contact [email protected].
