AT&T had a highly tuned, interactive reporting application built on Teradata. With over 100k internal users initiating over 2 million data calls per day, it leveraged every Teradata tool to achieve the sub-second data response time. Initially, AT&T was skeptical that Snowflake could match the performance of their Teradata-based application. However, during the migration process, they leveraged stored procedures for the API calls from their Java-based frontend. This allowed them to “pin” the stored procedures to specific virtual warehouses within each procedure, thus matching individual procedure workloads to corresponding warehouses. This gave AT&T several advantages over Teradata macro API calls, including the ability to leverage result caching in addition to warehouses. This successful migration provided a cost-effective alternative with equivalent performance, ultimately benefiting the company’s bottom line.
