Snowflake Data Marketplace Challenge: FAQ
Note: This FAQ is intended to answer common questions that may arise, but nothing in this FAQ overrides the official rules of the competition.
Overview
What is the Snowflake Data Marketplace Challenge?
The Snowflake Data Marketplace Challenge is a skill-based competition that demonstrates the value of third-party data for answering critical business questions. Participants must leverage the required Snowflake free trial account and data from Snowflake Data Marketplace to answer the challenge question they choose in one of four categories: financial services, healthcare, media/entertainment, and retail/CPG. Timeline
Contest Submission Period: February 16, 2021 to March 16, 2021
Judging Period: March 16, 2021 to April 6, 2021
The winner of each category will be notified on or about April 16, 2021 and will be identified on the contest site.
Eligibility
Who is eligible to participate?
To be eligible to participate, you must:
- Be 18 years or older as of the date of the entry
- Be a legal U.S. resident
- Not belong to the federal, government, education, or public sectors
Is there a cost to participate?
No purchase or payment is necessary. No purchase or payment of any kind will increase your chances of winning.
What is the requirement for using Snowflake?
All eligible entrants are required to activate and leverage the required Snowflake free trial account to access data from Snowflake Data Marketplace and answer the challenge question of their choice.
How do I get access to a Snowflake free trial account?
Please sign up for the required Snowflake free trial account using the link provided in your registration confirmation.
What if I already have a Snowflake free trial account?
All eligible entrants are required to activate and leverage the Snowflake free trial account to access data from Snowflake Data Marketplace and answer the challenge question of their choice. If you already have a free trial account, please sign up for another using the link provided in your registration confirmation.
What are the challenge questions?
- Financial services: As a financial planner, your client has received a stipend of $1 million USD and has asked you to help them invest in foreign currency. Which currency would you choose and why?
- Required data set: Knoema Economy Data Atlas
- Healthcare: Where in the continental U.S. would future deployments of a COVID-19 vaccine have the greatest overall societal impact and why? (State and city)
- Required data set: Starschema COVID-19 Epidemiological Data
- Media/entertainment: Which professional football quarterback is least likely to throw an interception during the 2021 regular season and why?
- Required data set: ThoughtSpot Fantasy Football Data
- Retail/CPG: In what U.S. location could you anticipate the highest foot traffic if you opened a new coffee shop and why? (State and city)

How many times can I enter?
You can submit one entry for the Snowflake Data Marketplace Challenge in one category only.
How many categories can I choose?
You can choose only one question category to submit your entry. Entrants who submit entries in multiple categories will be disqualified.
What steps should I take before submitting my entry?
- Register your interest (fill out the form on the event website to receive the submission link to submit your entry).
- Pick the challenge question you want to answer. Remember you can pick only one.
- Sign up for and leverage the required Snowflake free trial account. The link to the free trial account will be provided in your registration confirmation.
- Leverage the required data set for the category you chose.
- Submit your entry via the submission link in your registration confirmation.
What materials are required to enter?
Completed entries must include:
- A complete profile, including first and last name, business email address, phone number, job function, company name, and state
- An answer to the question posed in the category the contestant chose, which leverages the required Snowflake free trial account and, at a minimum, the required data set for the chosen category
- A written justification of the answer (up to 500 words)
- A document showing the SQL code used
- Visualization of the answer

What are the judges looking for?
- To be eligible for judging, entrants must sign up for and leverage the required Snowflake free trial account and answer the question posed by using the required data set for the chosen category from Snowflake Data Marketplace.
- A completed entry must provide an answer, a one-paragraph justification for the answer (up to 500 words), a visualization, and the SQL code.
- Get creative with your responses and visualization.
- Leverage multiple data sets.
What are the entry prizes?
All qualified participants will receive a Snowflake Data Marketplace Challenge T-shirt.
